A Real Treasure

Donated by carpenter, and craftsman CCB graduate Zachary Parks (we thought you might enjoy reading Zach’s description)
“This treasure chest this year is another pine box made out of the same beetle kill from south of rifle. When I say beetle kill pine the beetles give the wood a very cool look with lots of greens, blues, and grays. I stain them golden oak to make the colors pop extremely well, then it is cleared with a high gloss and to top it off I wax it with furniture wax to make it have an amazing smooth feel and finish. The best part of this treasure chest this year is the beautiful wood burnt columbine flowers that my daughter did. It also says Colorado across the bottom part of the lid. For the hardware, the side handles are a twisted metal, the hinges are a black steel, and the front handle to open the lid is a metal arrow that points to the right. On most of my treasure chest, I use a material called flocking and it gives a felt like feeling to the inside of the box a lot like the inside of a jewelry box and this year is no different. This one has a custom color that my daughter mixed up and it is lavender. Most of these treasure chests are built by me from start to finish but this year I told my daughter we needed to step up and give something better than last year so she wanted to help for the cause. I hope this treasure chest stands up to and beats last years. I really like the chest this year and from start to finish I will have around 60 hours into it. I hope you all like it and can’t wait to hear the responses to this one.”
