Local Federation of the Blind to Donate Materials to Blind School Library in Ceremony Thursday November 9 1:00 PM
For Immediate Release
The National Federation of the Blind looks to increase the knowledge base of students and staff at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind by providing research materials and kernels of truth in the form of a donation of Kernel books and other materials to the school’s library. This donation is to take place at the Adam’s Library between one and two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday November the 9th. The National Federation of the Blind is the oldest and largest organization of blind people in the United States.
With more than 500 chapters, divisions and special interest groups, the purpose of the NFB is to help blind and visually impaired citizens achieve greater opportunity and complete integration into society on terms of equality. According to Scott LaBarre, President, National Federation of the Blind of Colorado, “We are very, very fortunate to have one of the most active grassroots organizations affiliated with the National Federation of the Blind, and our members from all over the state have appreciated the work of the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind located in Colorado Springs.”
Local blind businessman, Kevan Worley often talks of the inspiration that he has received from reading these little volumes of stories about blind people. Kevan says, “Sometimes the vignettes motivate me because I see how normal blind Americans are, how they confront challenges and overcome them in inspiring ways to live great lives.” Thousands and thousands of these Kernel books in print, cassette and Braille, have been distributed throughout America. By donating volumes of these Kernel books to the school’s library, the NFB of Colorado Springs continues to find new ways to support the work of the school by providing the collected kernels of wisdom about blindness to the next generation.
The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind began in 1874 by Jonathan R. Kennedy, and has grown from a house in downtown Colorado to its current location on North Institute Street on 37 acres and serves over 280 students. The school serves both deaf, hard of hearing, and blind students from birth through the age of twenty one, and provides both residential and day schooling. Education focuses both on academic achievement and alternative techniques used by the blind. Through its combination of academic classes, compensatory skill development, and career training, the school prepares students to meet the ever-changing future ahead.
National Federation of the Blind member and alumni of the school George McDermith will make the presentation to Mr. Tutt, the school’s principal, and to Ms. Cullen, the School’s Librarian.
“We hope that these donated materials from the National Federation of the Blind will prove helpful to students and staff in enlightening people on what blindness is and is not.” states George McDermith.
